Korean serves as the official language on the Korean peninsula, spoken by approximately 63 million individuals in both North and South Korea. Linked to the Altaic language of central Asia, Korean’s origins are associated with the broader Altaic language family, which includes Mongolian, Turkish, and the Tungusic languages of Siberia. Within Korea, two standards of Korean exist: the Seoul dialect in South Korea and the Pyongyang dialect in North Korea, regulated by each country’s national language policy. Regional dialects further contribute to linguistic diversity, such as Hamgyong, Pyongan, Hwanghae in North Korea, and Kyongsang, Chungcheong, Cholla, and Cheju Island in South Korea.

The Hangul, consisting of 24 letters (10 vowels and 14 consonants), represents a significant achievement in Korean culture, contributing to one of the highest literacy rates globally.
